Low back pain is common, but the phrase covers a lot of different problems. One person’s pain comes from a simple overload flare-up after yardwork. Another person’s starts with repeated sitting, poor lifting, and reduced hip mobility. Someone else has leg symptoms that suggest nerve irritation. At Merivale Chiropractic & Massage Clinic, the job is to separate those patterns before deciding what treatment makes sense.

Common causes we consider
Earlier back-pain posts in this cluster were useful for one reason: they did not pretend there is only one cause. Common contributors include:
- muscle or ligament strain
- disc irritation or herniation
- joint restriction in the lumbar spine or pelvis
- prolonged sitting and deconditioning
- repetitive lifting or twisting at work
- slips, falls, or sports-related loading
- arthritis, stenosis, or other degenerative change
In Ottawa, winter slips and sudden seasonal workload changes still show up often. So do desk-related flare-ups.
Why assessment matters more than guessing
The same area can hurt for different reasons. That is why we ask about where the pain stays, whether it travels into the buttock or leg, what positions aggravate it, how sleep is affected, and what work or activity load looks like.
We also care about what low back pain is not. Pain caused by kidney issues, infection, inflammatory disease, or other medical conditions will not behave like a routine mechanical flare-up, so we watch for clues that point outside typical musculoskeletal care.
How chiropractors may help
Chiropractic care may help when movement loss, joint irritation, or load intolerance are part of the case. Treatment can include adjustments, mobilization, soft-tissue work, and practical advice about how to move during recovery.
The aim is not to magically “put everything back in place.” The aim is to improve comfort and function while reducing the factors that keep the back overloaded.
Why multidisciplinary care often works better
One older clinic post used the phrase “multidisciplinary approach,” and that is still the right idea. Low back pain is often treated best by mixing the tools that match the exam.
That may include:
- massage therapy for muscle guarding and stiffness
- acupuncture for selected pain patterns
- exercise progression and walking tolerance work
- traction-based treatment in selected cases
- ergonomic or lifting changes at work and home
Our exercise library can help between visits, but the most useful exercises are usually the ones prescribed for your specific presentation.
When low back pain needs urgent care
Conservative care is not the place to start if you have:
- progressive leg weakness
- loss of bladder or bowel control
- numbness in the saddle region
- fever with severe back pain
- major trauma with severe symptoms
Those red flags need urgent medical assessment.
What to expect at Merivale Clinic in Ottawa
We review your symptoms, health history, work and activity demands, and whether the pattern sounds disc-related, joint-related, muscular, or more complicated. We then assess movement, tenderness, neurological findings when needed, and tolerance for certain positions and tasks.
If conservative care fits, we explain what we think is driving the pain, what the short-term plan is, and what you should do between visits. If the presentation looks outside routine clinic care, we tell you that too.
If low back pain is getting in the way of work, sleep, or training, our Ottawa team can assess what is going on and build a practical next step. You can book an appointment to get started.
