Heat & Ice exercises.

Guidance on when and how to use heat and ice therapy to manage pain, swelling, and muscle tension at home safely.

Overview

Heat and ice are simple, effective tools for managing pain at home. Ice reduces swelling and numbs acute pain, making it ideal for fresh injuries, inflamed joints, and post-exercise soreness. Heat relaxes tight muscles, improves blood flow, and eases chronic stiffness. Knowing when to use each, and for how long, can make a meaningful difference in your comfort and recovery. These videos explain proper application techniques and common mistakes to avoid.

Common questions about heat & ice exercises

When should I use ice instead of heat?
Ice is usually better for fresh injuries, swelling, and hot inflamed areas. Heat is typically better for chronic stiffness once acute swelling has settled.
How long should I ice an area?
A common home approach is 10 to 15 minutes with a barrier between ice and skin. Avoid prolonged icing that causes skin injury or rebound stiffness.
Can I alternate heat and ice?
Some people do contrast therapy when directed. Ask your practitioner before alternating if you have circulatory issues, sensory loss, or an unclear injury.
