PNF Stretching exercises.

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretches that use contraction and relaxation to improve flexibility.

Overview

PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching is a technique that uses alternating cycles of muscle contraction and relaxation to achieve deeper, more effective stretches. Originally developed for rehabilitation, PNF stretching is now widely used to improve flexibility in healthy individuals and athletes. These exercises typically involve holding a stretch, contracting the target muscle against resistance for a few seconds, then relaxing into a deeper stretch. A partner can help, but many PNF stretches can be performed solo using a towel or resistance band.

PNF Stretch

Common questions about pnf stretching exercises

What is PNF stretching?
PNF stretching pairs a gentle stretch with a brief muscle contraction, then relaxes into a slightly deeper stretch. It is often used in rehab to improve flexibility efficiently.
Is PNF better than regular stretching?
It can be more effective for some people when coached well, but it is not automatically better. Technique, timing, and your tissue tolerance matter more than the label.
Do I need a partner for PNF?
Not always. Many PNF drills can be done solo with a towel or band. A partner or practitioner can help when leverage or control is difficult.
